HUC-JIR Soup Kitchen
25+ Years of Feeding Our Community
|
February 2016

Dear Friends,
|
"This is such a great place to spend my afternoon. I make it whenever I can."
Darrell, Soup Kitchen Guest
|
Every Monday night for the past 27 years, approximately 100 guests like Darrell line up outside of the New York campus of HUC-JIR for our weekly Soup Kitchen. HUC-JIR students, community members, and volunteers greet guests with a friendly smile and lead them inside to a warm meal and an hour of shelter from the cold. Before they leave, guests have the opportunity to meet with NYU law students who offer free legal aide, and to select items from our growing clothing and toiletries closet.
The Soup Kitchen works hard to sustain the whole guest. In addition to the amenities we’ve been fortunate to offer over the years, we are excited about new initiatives that launched in the fall. Monday night service now includes live music from world-renowned jazz musicians, creating a festive atmosphere and elevating the experience guests have while they enjoy their meals. We also began a partnership with Duane Reade to offer free flu shots to our guests, an important addition to our service, which we hope to continue each winter. With so many new initiatives, we’ve been blessed to have a fully-booked schedule of volunteers from schools, synagogues, and youth groups (both Jewish and non-Jewish) from the tri-state area!
“Having middle and high school students participate in the
Soup Kitchen encourages our youth to be civically-conscious.”
Jason, Soup Kitchen Guest

The HUC-JIR Soup Kitchen depends on the generosity of our community to accomplish our goals, and we thank you for your continued support. Please join us on February 25, 2016 at 6:00 pm for “Musical Soup for the Soul,” a special evening featuring musical performances benefiting our Soup Kitchen. The evening will help us raise money for our continued and new initiatives. Email us at soupkitchen@gmail.com to get involved.

Whether you are able to join us on February 25 or not, please consider supporting our efforts by making a gift online. A contribution of $36 provides six meals; $72 feeds a table of guests; and $1,000 underwrites an entire evening of Soup Kitchen services. Your gift makes a difference.
