HUC-JIR Soup Kitchen – 25+ Years of Feeding Our Community
| Cantorial students Lauren Levy and Kenneth Feibush describe the work they do as coordinators at HUC-JIR's Soup Kitchen. |
Dear Friends,
“What’s happening here has exceeded my expectations. Not necessarily because of the beautiful food... but because of the love and warmth I feel when I see the volunteers and the fact that what they do comes from the heart...”
Every Monday night over the past 25 years, approximately 100 guests, like this one, line up outside of our New York campus for our weekly student-led Soup Kitchen. They are greeted by HUC-JIR students, teens from local Reform synagogues, and local community members who lead them downstairs with a friendly smile to a warm meal and an hour of shelter from the cold. Before they leave, guests have the chance to select items from the clothing and toiletries closet. NYU law students volunteer time to help guests with legal matters.
“All my clothes come from here. It’s the best place in town to go. All I need is just this place.”
In order to help with other needs our guests may have, we recently expanded the services offered in the Soup Kitchen. There is often a nutritionist available to help guests make healthy choices on a limited budget. Additionally, we work with the New York City Coalition Against Hunger to recruit some of our guests to join Food Action Boards (FAB) where they learn the skills to advocate for themselves, an example of Maimonides’ teaching that the highest form of tzedakah is to help people help themselves.

Please join us on March 12, 2015 from 6:00-9:00 pm for “A Few of Our Favorite Meals,” a special evening featuring different interpretations of our guests’ favorite meals. We hope to see you there!

If you have an item to donate to the Soup Kitchen Silent Auction, please let us know.

The HUC-JIR Soup Kitchen depends on the generosity of our community to accomplish our goals, and we thank you for your help in the past. Whether you are able to join us on March 12 or not, we hope you will consider making a gift online.

A contribution of $36 provides six meals, $72 feeds a table of guests, and $1,000 underwrites an entire evening of Soup Kitchen services. Your gift really makes a difference. Learn more about our Soup Kitchen.
