Dear friends,

On March 16, 2020, members of our student leadership team gathered to stuff bags with as many sandwiches and socks that fit, with the looming possibility that it might be the last time we would be able to serve our guests for a while. Months after the heartbreaking decision to close our doors for an extended period of time, we are grateful and thrilled to let you know that the HUC-JIR Soup Kitchen will be reopening for outdoor, socially-distanced service on August 3rd! This will be a robust outdoor service, meaning that it will be our typical to-go bags of sandwiches, milk, fruit, and cookies, PLUS socks and small toiletries as we are able. We are eager to check in with our guests and provide this important service for our community. As of now, we anticipate this outdoor service running through December 2020 and likely into 2021 depending on the health status of our city.

In partnership with our administration and student leadership, the Soup Kitchen will operate with new safety procedures to ensure the health and safety of volunteers and guests. While we are currently unable to host local volunteer groups, we have reached out to past volunteers for other ways to remotely connect with the Soup Kitchen learning and community. We are all hopeful that as soon as it is safe to be back together in person, we will return indoors with the fullest experience for all!

We are also in the process of restocking our supplies for our outdoor service. During the last few months, we have made several in-kind donations of food and supplies to the nearby Bowery Mission. Bowery Mission shares our charge to provide compassionate care and meals to those in need, and was able to continue offering essential services during this difficult time.
